South Lanai Dive Site Map
The sixth largest island in the Hawaiian Island chain, as well as the smallest accessible to the public, Lanai is also known as the “Pineapple Island” because of the expansive Dole plantation that once covered it. The earliest settlers to Lanai likely formed coastal fishing villages before migrating inward to grow taro and other crops in the fertile, volcanic soil. According to Hawaiian mythology, Lanai was once home to a mischievous prince who was banished to the island by his father as punishment for his many pranks. They were reunited when the king saw his son’s fire continuously burning despite the islands inhospitable terrain. Before their reconciliation, the prince was rumored to have pulled up all of the Breadfruit trees on the island, which is said to be the reason for them not being found on Lanai.
A product of the piping hot lava flows and tectonic shifts that formed the Hawaiian Islands, Lanai is known for its underwater topography. Listed to the right are just a few of the over 20 dive sights accessible from our boats, each offering something unique for a diving adventure.
