Aloha from the Beautiful Island of Maui where clear blue waters and colorful fish and friendly natives abound…..ahhhhh.

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water …OPEN WATER…...
the movie has been playing all over the country. Have I seen it, you betcha! Did it scare me, NO. It did underscore the need to choose a dive operator wisely, understand boat procedures, and ultimately, as a certified scuba diver, be responsible for oneself.

A reputable dive charter operator will have a procedure in place to account for all divers on-board. This should be done prior to the boat departing the harbor, and also prior to the boat leaving the dive site. There are a variety of methods used to account for divers. Be sure you are aware of the method used by your dive operator. Lahaina Divers uses a dive manifest, verbal roll call, and diver stations to identify each diver / passenger on board the vessel.

When the boat returned to harbor, the captain and crew left without checking the cabin for customer left items. This is not critical; however, most dive operators will check the cabin of the vessel after each charter to secure any left items. In this case, the crew would have noticed two gear bags remained with identification in them. The two divers would have been rescued within hours.

The two stranded divers carried dive knives for emergencies. Dive knives are an important part of dive gear should one get tied up in fishing line and for protection, etc. Equally important equipment divers should carry on them is a means of communicating a need for help when at the waters’ surface. I believe this is the other critical point the movie made. There are numerous items that would have attracted the attention of passing vessels: water proof flares, a safety sausage, a dive whistle, a mirror. Most dive retailers sell these items. Point taken.

Retail Remodel

We’re busy preparing for your next visit. Our retail store is undergoing a facelift and update. We’ve got a new floor plan to help charter check-ins flow smoother; new display cases and new lighting to capture the best in our retail products, new wall colors and accent pieces to give the feel of being underwater (before we even get there) ….and much more. It will be a dramatic change with lots of color. The remodel is scheduled for completion the first half of November. Can’t wait for you to see it!!
