Whale Season Fast Approaching!

The seasons first Humpback whale, “Kohola” (pronounced ko ho la) in Hawaiian, was sighted in mid October. Their arrival is always a thrill for local folks and tourists alike. For divers it’s a bonus: great scuba diving and whale songs underwater, and non-stop whale watching to and from the dive sites. It doesn’t get any better.

Humpback whales are both conceived and born in Hawaiian waters. They do their courting, have their calves, and bring their yearlings back to the Hawaiian Islands each year. With its’ shallow waters in between the islands, MAUI is the favored destination.

Our last newsletter mentioned “Heat Runs” and I promised I would elaborate in this letter. You can probably guess that a heat run is several males vying to mate with an eligible female. These males can spot (sense) a female in heat from far away. She will most likely already be escorted by a male, but during a heat run he will be challenged by several other males (sometimes 8 to 12). What makes it so noteworthy is the thrashing and crashing that goes on with these 80,000 lb creatures posturing to decide who will be the guy to mate with her. This chase can go on for hours with lots of head butting, body slamming, and pectoral slapping. It’s some amazing sight to see and most of the action happens on the surface.

Maui – No Ka Oi…….again!!!!

Once again, Maui has been voted the “Best Island Destination in the World” by the readers of Conde Nast Travelers Magazine (November 2003 issue). Maui has been in the top position since the reader ratings began. Maui was also the runaway winner in the ScubaBoard.com poll with 52% voting Maui as their favorite Hawaiian island. The Big Island was second with 23%.

No argument here!!!

Hope to see you in Maui soon!
Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)....the gang at Lahaina Divers.
