Aloha from Lahaina Divers in Maui, Hawaii!

This is the first of our newsletters. Please let us know what you think. Email us at ldsales@maui.net.

Late winter on Maui brings low 80 degree afternoons and mid '70's water temperatures... a beautiful time to dive. We just returned from Molokini this morning after diving again with majestic manta rays. But on to other More urgent things...

Changes in the Flying After Diving Guidelines

The 2002 Flying After Diving Workshop produced some new flying after diving recommendations. Recent experimental trials indicate the risk of decompression sickness(DCS) decreases as the preflight surface interval increases. Based on these studies, the workshop reached the following concenseus recommendations. These recommendations apply to flights at cabin pressures between 600 meters/2000 feet and 2400 meters/8000 feet and to divers who are without DCS symptoms. Work suggests that immediate ascent to 600 meters/2000 feet altitude is possible with low DCS risk. Following these recommendations reduces DCS risk but does not guarantee that a diver will avoid DCS.

For dives within the No-Decompression limits:

• Single Dives:
A minimum preflight surface interval of 12 hours is suggested.

• Repetitive Dives and/or Multiday Dives:
A minimum preflight surface interval of 18 hours is suggested.
• For dives requiring decompression stops:
A minimum preflight surface interval greater than 18 hours is suggested.

Flying after diving recommendations need not be considered for flights to ambient/cabin pressures less than 600 meters/2000 feet.

Recreational Dive Planner Recalled

PADI is recalling six versions of the Recreational Dive Planner used for calculating dive profiles. Errors by the printer caused inaccurate or missing numbers on these tables. The risk of injury from these errors is remote and no injuries have been reported. The English Imperial versions of the recalled RDP's were all distributed after May 2002. All of the involved RDP's have a production code on the bottom right corner of the back side (under Table3). In checking the production codes on your tables, ignore the first three digits and only check the last four.
