SHARKS

I’m a tad late on this newsletter and for that please accept my humble apologies.
The weather has been outstanding and we've been diving every day. On June 9th, our divers were witness to a very rare site at Molokini Crater. The divers were doing a 65ft drift dive off Reefs End when a group of approximately 200 Grey Reef Sharks were spotted in the blue water approximately 30 feet away. For those of you timid about sharks, they were not interested in the divers. Lahaina Divers Captain, Dan Saunders (a long time resident and veteran diver) believes this to be part of the sharks mating ritual. After mating, the females will group together and chase away males attempting to approach the group. He has observed this behavior one other time, approximately 20 years ago. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t occurred, just that we divers haven’t been lucky enough to see it.

As of this date, July 22nd, Dive Guide J. C. Satterwhite says he still sees the group of female Grey Reef Sharks at Reefs End protecting their newborns against predators, however only about 30 of the females remain with their young. The others have left. Still an awesome sight to see! Interested in finding out more about the sharks of Hawaii? E-mail your physical address to ldsales@maui.net and I’ll send you some literature.

And while we’re on the subject, the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium is offering a
Shark Dive in its 750,000 gallon Open Ocean Exhibit for Certified Scuba Divers ages 15 and up. They have over twenty sharks (including a TIGER Shark), stingrays, and thousands of tropical reef fish. Lahaina Divers Staff were invited to try it, have checked it out, and the overall consensus is “ it’s way cool ”. You can even bring an underwater camera to record the event….your friends will never know that you encountered that tiger shark in an aquarium. For more information give us a call at 1-800-998-3483.
