Dauntless Arrives!!!!!

As 2003 faded, the era of our two old faithful dive boats: Endeavor and Reliant faded as well. Ringing in the New Year, Dominion, and Lahaina Divers’ newest custom built dive boat Dauntless came onboard and a new era of Maui diving adventures began. As nearly identical sister ships, both were built by Newton Boats, Dominion and Dauntless offer a more spacious deck area and a faster ride to the dive site to get you in the water diving quicker. Both are boarding and bathroom handicap accessible and proudly wear the Handicap Scuba Association (HSA) logo. With all the feedback we’ve been getting, both boats are a huge hit!

Lahaina Divers Trivia

Did you know that all of Lahaina Divers charter boats were named after Star Trek Ships? Think you know the name of all 7 vessels? The first 3 respondents to e-mail the list to me (in order from first to last) at lahdiver@maui.net will receive a free Lahaina Divers Staff T-Shirt. So….put your thinking cap on, I’ll be waiting.

Do I need a wetsuit in Hawaii?

One of the most common questions by divers coming to Hawaii is “Do I need a wetsuit?”. Let me start by saying during the summer months, although advisable to wear a wetsuit, you can probably get away without wearing one. The catch: you’ll want to take care when diving near corals and spiny urchins. A rub against one can cause a nasty scrape.
Summer water temps average 77 to 82 degrees- May – October.
Winter water temps average 74 to 77 degrees - November - April.

If you’re used to diving east or west coast waters of the U.S., a 3mm wetsuit will do. If you typically dive the waters of the Caribbean, Mexico or Florida, you may want to bump it up to a 5mm wetsuit. Since Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific the water temps are somewhat cooler than the average 82+ degree waters of the Caribbean, Mexico or Florida. You decide.

Going digital….

State of the art photography is evolving from 35mm to digital and the staff of Lahaina Divers is bringing 5 mega pixel digital technologies to their underwater photography services. These photos offer unbelievable detail and clarity …just looking at them will transport you back to Maui (well not really “transport”, but it will bring those memories back). Currently, both 35mm Nikonos and digital photos are available on most charters. Be sure to ask your dive leader.
